About Sakura in Japan

This is Somei Yoshino. Photographed on Sakura Street in front of the Bank of Japan.

When Japanese people refer to “sakura,” they are most often talking about the Somei Yoshino variety. Unlike other cherry trees, Somei Yoshino produces its pale pink flowers before its leaves emerge, creating a breathtaking sea of soft pink blossoms.

Enjoying Hanami

This is a type of Yamazakura. Although the exact variety is unknown, you can see that the leaves appear first, followed by the blossoms. Japan has a wide range of cherry trees, each blooming at different times, allowing visitors to enjoy the beauty of sakura for an extended period.

While admiring the beautiful blooms, why not take a moment to appreciate the different varieties of sakura? Each species has its own charm, from the rich pink of Yaezakura to the drooping elegance of Shidarezakura.

Springtime in Japan is a celebration of nature’s beauty. Be sure to savor the season and create unforgettable memories under the cherry blossoms!
