One of my favorite hotels, where I’ve stayed more than six times, is ‘Minamiaso Luna Observatory Auberge “Forest Atelier” ‘ in Shirakawa, Minamiaso Village, Aso District, Kumamoto Prefecture.
The standout feature of this hotel is the largest privately-owned observatory in Kyushu, owned by the hotel’s owner. The astronomical observatory is equipped with an 82mm reflective telescope and a computer-controlled electronic system (which includes a motorized function to automatically track stars). On a clear night, you can even see Saturn’s rings in sharp detail. Hotel guests can participate in stargazing tours and enjoy a high-precision planetarium experience.
Another highlight is the authentic French dinner, where you can savor steak made from “Akaushi,” a famous brand of beef from Kumamoto Prefecture.
Additionally, there is a natural hot spring on the property, and hotel guests can enjoy bathing in it by reserving a time slot in advance.
This place truly allows you to spend a slow, relaxing time, and it’s one of my personal favorites. Tokyo and Kyoto are great, but every once in a while, it’s nice to spend time in a peaceful place where time flows slowly like this.
